The Lippmeier Name

By: Charles Stephen Lippmeier & Betsey Priscilla (Anderson) Lippmeier
Summary
Joseph Lippmeier, married Catherine Fallon (b. 1819), in Germany. Their child, Henry J. Lippmeier, was born 11/1/1854 in Mt. Healthy, Ohio. No date of birth or death for Joseph. Catherine died 6/25/1883 in Cincinnatti.
Henry J. Lippmeier married Arlamecchia (also listed in census as Artemina and Artemesia) Elizabeth Roby, who was born in West Virginia in August 1859, on 12/13/1874 in Hamilton County. In 1900, He and Elizabeth were living at 905 Monastery Street in Cincinnatti. He was listed in various sources as a driver, day laborer, real estate agent, and painter. He and Elizabeth had 8 children, 5 of whom lived: Charles, born 3/1879, in Ohio; Harry A., born 12/1882 in Ohio; Ida, born 12/6/1886 in Cincinnatti; William (Chuck’s grandfather)born 6/1890, in Kentucky; and Edward R., born 2/92 in Kentucky. Henry J. died 8/21/1912 of apoplexy and atheriosclerosis. He is buried in Walnut Hills German Protestant Cemetery in Hamilton City, Ohio. His last address was 2300 Buxton Avenue, Norwood, Ohio.
Artemesia moved to Chicago sometime before 1917 with Harry A. and William George. Their first residence was 3446 Carrol Avenue. Harry A. and William G. are listed in the 1917 Chicago City Directory as printers. William George (Chuck’s grandfather) is listed in the 1920 census as married, but no wife is listed at their residence. In the 1923 City Directory, Harry A., William G. and Artemesia are listed at 4715 Fulton Street.
William George married Mildred Marie Schnell (born 3/27/1896), probably in 1923. Their child, William George (Chuck’s father) was born 6/28/1924. The address on the birth certificate is 3736 Claremont Avenue.
In 1928, Mildred S. and Ella Schnell (who became Grandma Adams) lived at 3500 N. Irving Avenue. The City Directory that year lists Harry A. and William George at 4715 Fulton Street.
In the 1930 census, Harry A. and Artemesia McDonald are listed at 4715 Fulton Street. Mildred S. and William George, the child, are listed at 3415 N. Irving Street. Although there is no documentation at this point, William George, the father, may have died in 1928 or 1929. It looks as if Artemesia married Mr. McDonald in 1928. Artemesia was 70 in 1930.
The last address for Mildred S. was 323 Armitage in Chicago for 1943 from her application for Social Security. From the Social Security death index she died in Novemember, 1972.
Europe
The only German records we have of the Lippmeier name are from the International Genealogical Index-Germany which lists:
Friedrich Lippmeier - Gender: M - Birth: 3 Feb. 1865 - Katholisch, - Place: Witten, Westfalen, Preussen
Father Johann Lippmeier - Mother: Anna Maria Boese
Friedr. Lippmeier - Gender: M – Marriage: 16 May 1874 - Katholisch, - Place: Bochum, Westfalen, Preussen
Spouse: Theresia Beimen
Johann Lippmeier - Gender: M - Marriage: 22 Aug 1863 - Katholisch, - Place: Delbrueck, Westfalen, Preussen
Spouse: Catharina Rebbekemeier
Clementine Lippmeier – Gender: F - Christening: 7 Aug. 1874 - Evangelisch, - Place: Derne, Westfalen, Preussen
Father: Anton Lippmeier- Mother Caroline Loebbe
USA EARLIEST
In the United States the first Lippmeier we have been able to identify is:
J. A. Lippmeier (probably Johann1) - Age: 28 from Brackel, a neighborhood in Dortmund, Arnsberg Westfalen
And a female - First Initial: F. - Age 28,
a child First Initial: L. - Age: 4
and a child First Initial: M (probably Maria1) - Age: 6 months
Note: 1: From “A Table of Abbreviations” associated with the passenger lists, A., F., and L. are not on the list.
According to Betsey’s memory, the passenger listing of ships from Bremmen, Germany to New York is the source for the listing we have of J.A. Lippmeier and his apparent family who arrived on May 14, 1851 on the ship “Carl & Emma”.
There are no national census records indicating any Lippmeiers at the National Archives in Waltham, MA that we were able to find before 1900. We tried the CD based indexes for Ohio 1880; Ohio, Kentucky & Virginia 1870;and New York 1860. There is no index for Ohio 1860. The US census records for 1890 were destroyed in a fire set by demostrators ( I think he said in 1927). The Archive staff indicated that the CD based indexes are unreliable so it would not be conclusive to say that no Lippmeiers existed in these places at these times
Betsey thinks that we may get more information from the Cincinnati city index that she can access at the Boston Public Library for years before 1900.
Of course, Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates may yield more information for this time period.
Could this, in fact be Joseph Lippmeier and wife Catherine Fallon?
Its not likely that this is the same Lippmeiers. This shows the F. passenger being 28 years old in 1851 and since we know that Catherine Fallon was born in 1919, 1851 – 28 = 1823 not 1919. Also, we have no records indicating the 2 children L. and M. connected to Joseph and Catherine. I suppose one could fantasize that J. A. Lippmeier came to America with his wife and 2 children and on the trip to OH after arrival the family was dissolved and J. A. started over in OH but there is no reason to make this speculation other than J. A. Lippmeier’s first initial being J.

This record is not very legible:
Henry J. Lippmeier lists Real Estate as his occupation
Harry lists U.S. Printing Co. as his occupation.
William works in a Factory
Edward works for a Lamp Factory.
Harry D. Bixler lists as a Lithographer
Charles and Matilda were married 8 years
Charles owns his own shop and is a Tinner.
Apparently, Henry J Lippmeier is the same Henry Lippmeier as in the 1900 census. His wife is no longer Elizabeth but rather, Artimenia. Did Elizabeth die? Probably not. The Gubanc record indicates Henry J. Lippmeier’s wife is actually Arlamechia Elizabeth Roby.
Son Charles has apparently married Matilda around 1902 had a son Carl the following year.
Florence is not referenced in 1910 but a Grandson and Son in Law are. Apparently Florence died and her husband and son moved in with her father and step mother?

Ella Schnell married Adams and became whom I knew as Grandma Adams.
Since Ella and Mildred lived at the same address there is a connection. We know that Mildred’s maidian name was Schnell so I assume they were sisters Mildred Lippmeier is married to William G. Lippmeier My father William George Lippmeier was born in 1925 to Mildred and William George Lippmeier above. My understanding is that Ella Schnell raised my father William George Lippmeier b.1925.

The United States 1920 Census of Illinois: We searched the index for the Name code L156 at the National Archives in Waltham, MA which includes the Lippmeier name We found a listing for:
Anna Lippmeier – Birthplace: Hungry 4525 Clifton Ave. Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
Enumerated with Frasier Marguerite Relationship: Lodger

Son: William G. – Age: 29 – Bithplace: Ohio
This index leads us to the census record, which provided us with the further information that:
Vol: 57 E.D. 863 Sht: 2 Line 17
Artimieshia is widowed
William G is married. There is no indication of whom he is married to.
William and Harry are both Lithographers
Apparently, Artmieshia is the same person as Henry J. Lippmeiers wife Artemina of Ohio. After Henry J. died Artmieshia seems to have taken two of her sons William G and Harry A to Illinois leaving Charles, Edward and the Bixlers Grand Son: Carl Bixler and Son in Law: Harry D Bixler in Ohio. We have no idea why this move was made. It’s interesting that William G. was already married by 1920.
We have not pursued Anna Lippmeier from Hungry as there is no reason to believe that she is part of the same line of Lippmeiers.

SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX
The Social Security Death Records indicate:
Amy Lippmeier Born: 14 Jun 1889 Died Jan. 1975 SSN issued Illinois
Isabella Lippmeier Born: 20 Jan. 1889 Died: Jan. 1976 SSN issued Ohio
Mildred Lippmeier Born: 28 Mar. 1896 Died Nov. 1972 SSN issued: Illinois

William Lippmeier Born: 4 Oct. 1933 Died 15 May 2000 SSN issued Ohio
We have no indication of who any of the SS death record people are except Charles who is probably the son of Edward R as listed in the 1920 Ohio census.
There are apparently a number of Illinois Lippmeiers that are not directly connected to the Ohio Lippmeier line
